Jumping from Airplanes
We work with a pretty amazing nonprofit organization in Frederick, Oklahoma that does their own type of history preservation. In an old WWII hangar, in this small town in Southwestern Oklahoma, a group of people teach and perform round canopy static line jumps in full WWII parajumper uniform. There are other groups that do static line or round canopy jumps in the name of preserving the legacy of these brave men. However, the WWII Airborne Demonstration Team (WWII ADT) jump from C-47. The all volunteer organization maintains and performs all necessary care and feeding of two authentically painted WWII aircraft. They conduct only three jump schools a year, each is sold out months in advance. Students live in barracks and eat at the team mess hall in the last remaining hangar on old Frederick Army Air Field. Oh and did I mention they conduct the jump schools in full WWII attire?
Upon completion of Jump School (and after several more jumps) a jumper joins the Demonstration Team that participates in Air shows across the country and even around the world. To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, the WWII ADT participated in several commemorative jumps across Europe. We participated in the Cross-Channel jump at Normandy and the jumps commemorating Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands (C did the actual jumping, while B took helped coordinate ground support… we’ll post another article on this topic).
Preserving the Legacy
WWII ADT conducted round canopy jump operations in Normandy, France at the 75th Anniversary celebration.
